September 19 to 24

 What a busy week!

Students enjoyed the field trip to Granary Road on Wednesday.  I hope that they came home and shared all about it with you.  Here are a few pictures from the day.

Hopefully the students were able to come home and tell you some new facts about spiders, bees, ants and bats.

This week in math we worked on creating patterns.  We used pattern blocks.

We also began some problem solving in math.  Students worked on a problem using 6 red, 6 blue and 3 green beads to create a pattern.

This week in writing we used our five senses to add details to our walking stories.  This will also be reinforced in next week's homework.

Thursday students participated in the Terry Fox run.  Students showed determination by not stopping during the entire run.  We also learned a little more about Terry For through a character lens.  Students were able to identify many of Terry Fox's character traits.

I am still in need of one more parent for our in school field trip next Tuesday from 9:00 to 11:00 please let me know if you have a current volunteer clearance and can join us.

Have a good weekend,

Mrs. Coulling

September 13th to 17th

 Hello,

It was a busy week at school.  Students seem to be settling into our classroom routines and expectations.

Wednesday was International Dot Day.  We read the book and engaged in a great conversation about the message of the book.  We talked about "making a mark" and seeing where it takes you.  Students were all given a dot and asked to create a picture using the dot as a the beginning.

In Science, we have begun our study of Small Crawling and Flying Animals.  We went outside to see what animals we could find in our local school ground.  Students examined different insect mouths to determine how that type of mouth is adapted to how and what the eat.  We looked at mouths for chewing, sucking, lapping and piercing and sucking.

In math, we have been looking at patterns with 3 to 5 elements.  We are talking about vocabulary such as core, attribute, repeating.  Students have been creating patterns with a given core.  Next steps will be extending patterns and describing the pattern rule.

In Social Studies, we have begun our introductory unit of mapping.  This week we learned about the compass rose.

In writing, we have reviewed walking stories.  These stories focus on a noun (person, place or thing) and describing it.  We read the book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" which is a good example of a walking story describing Alexander's day.  We wrote a walking story about leaves together as a class.  Next week students will begin writing their own walking stories.

We are still in need of volunteers for the Teacher's Pet in school field trip Tuesday, September 28th from 9:00 to 11:00.  If you have a current volunteer clearance and are able to volunteer please let me know via email.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns,

Mrs. Coulling

Love of Reading

We are thrilled and excited that our school has been adopted by Chapters Chinook! From September 13th to October 3rd, this store is going to fundraise on our behalf through donations done directly at the Chapters Chinook location. We’re also going to be raising funds to support our library through the direct fundraising page, located below. Please spread the work by sharing this link with family and friends.

https://indigoloveofreadingfoundation.givecloud.co/fundraisers/le-roi-daniels-calgary-alberta

Our school is going to receive every dollar raised to support our library and receive an additional 30% discount off books when we shop at Indigo & Chapters program donations. These funds will go long way to bringing more diverse and inclusive picture books to our classrooms.

Please help us by showing your support for our library and our school community! We look forward to surprising the staff and children at Le Roi Daniels School with all the new library books this year!  Thank you for your continued support.

 Hello Parents,

I have posted the homework for the week under the homework page found above.

Thank you to all of you have already returned your field trip forms and the offers to volunteer.  Students are looking forward to going to Granary Road on September 22nd.

I am still in need of 4 parents to volunteer for Teachers's Pet September 28th from 9:00 to 11:00, if you are able to volunteer and have a current clearance, please email me.
