December 6th to 10th

 Hello,

Wow it is hard to believe that we only have one more week of school before our 2 week break.  Students are starting to get excited.

Next week is going to full of some fun holiday activities.

Here are some highlights

Dec 13 - FANCY/FORMAL Christmas attire or formal uniform

Dec 14 Casual - Wear colours found in Christmas lights

Dec 15 Casual - Wear a Santa hat, antlers, or an elf hat, carolling during our gym block

Dec 16 Casual - Christmas sweater, fun food, carolling during our gym block

Dec 17 - last day of classes for 2021 - PJ day

This week we:

Math - worked on 2D shapes and 3D objects.  Students made a google slide show.  If you would like to see what they made they can log onto to their google drive at home through google and show you.  Friday we also used mini marshmallows and tooth picks to make shapes and 3D objects.  Some of them are bringing them home to share with you.  Next week we will be doing from addition and subtraction review before starting with 2 digits in January.

In Science this week we created temporary magnets.  You can ask your child how to make items like a nail or a pair of scissors into a temporary magnet.  We will be finishing up magnetism next week in preparation for the break and then starting a new unit in January.

In Social Studies we talked about Inuit cultures, festivals and traditions.  Next week we will be finishing up Iqaluit.  We will be looking at the natural resources found there.  In January we will start our third and final community of study Saskatoon.

In Language Arts, we finished our mixed-up animals from last week and we also worked with the almost wordless book "red sled" by Lita Judge.  We have also begun looking at double graphemes now.  Students have learned the 5 combinations that make the "er" sound - er, ir, ur, wor, ear like in early.

Thursday we had a special virtual assembly from Earth Rangers.  Students were excited to learn some new facts about wild animals like the lynx.

I will be posting some homework this Sunday that will be due January 7th.  I will send home their homework folders and spelling tests on Monday.  We will also be sharing our magnet projects early next week and then I will send those home again.  If you child did not bring their project today please make sure that it is here on Monday for sharing and reflection.

Have a good weekend,

Mrs. Allison Coulling

December 3rd Updates

 Hello,

It is hard to believe that it is already December and we only have two more weeks of school before the break.  Students were so excited to see snow this morning and get to play outside in it today at recess.

This week in Science we continued our look at magnets with lots of hands on activities.  We compared magnet strengths, discovered that magnets have polarity (likes repel and opposites attract) and we demonstrated that most materials are transparent to the effects of a magnet.

In Social Studies we continued with our look at Iqaluit.  We learned about what it was like in the Early Days in Iqaluit and some of their traditions.

In math we looked about 3D objects.  Students are making a google slide show showcasing their understanding of 2D shapes and 3D objects.  We will continue to work on this next week.

In writing we read the book "The Mix-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle.  Students are creating their own mixed up animals but combining traits of different animals and reinforcing using similes.  Such as my animal is as wise an owl.

Students are continuing to do daily literacy centres.  We are working on making connections to what we read and making inferences.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Coulling
